I wanted to create something based on a personal interest of mine, Greek mythology. Specifically, I looked at the history of dance in Greece and wanted to show the story of how it began and its ties to the Gods. I came up with an idea of a 3D space with 5 stages of the story shown on plates rotating in a zoetrope style. Plate 1 was titled ‘Chaos to the Beginning’ and showed the belief among Greek myth that the world was created from chaos and formed into a flat planet that we know as Earth. Plate 2 was titled ‘Terpsichore’ and shows the Greek goddess of dance sitting on a throne playing a lyre. Terpsichore was one of the 9 muses of art and design, becoming an important figure when depicting the arts in Greek mythology today. Plate 3 was titled ‘Prometheus’, in Greek mythology, the belief for how humans came to be was that the God, Prometheus, created humans from clay, which then became the very first version of the human race, the Golden Race. Plate 4 was a simpler design titled ‘Fire’. Greek dance is heavily inspired by the different aspects of the natural world, so I wanted to show this through the flickering of fire. Plate 5, the final plate, was titled ‘Modern Dance’ and was a drawing of tourists dancing in a circle with a Greek pattern laced around the edge.
